Serato vs Traktor (Detailed Comparison)

In the Djing world, very few software are as popular as Serato and Traktor. These two programs have cemented a reputation for both offering a huge myriad of features and excellent reliability while at the same time being very accessible and easy to use, exactly what you want in a DJing software. It's safe to say that both of these choices are excellent for both newbie and experienced DJs, but have you wondered which of these two choices better?

The answer is that like most things in life, it depends. If you are looking for the software that is most compatible with DJ hardware, with a very intuitive layout, choose Serato DJ Pro. On the other hand, choose Traktor Pro 3 if you want something with more customizable options or are on a more limited budget. Honestly, you can't do wrong with any of these two though. Both are excellent for both newbie and experienced DJs.

Both Serato and Traktor were made decades ago, and they, along with Rekordbox DJ and Virtual DJ, are considered the cream of the crop when it comes to DJing software. In fact, they have long been considered two of the top choices for professional DJs. In this article, I will be talking a little bit more about Serato and Traktor, their quirks and features, and their differences and similarities. This article will be really useful for anybody looking to start using one of these two but aren't sure which one to choose. I hope you find it useful!

If you want to watch a short video about the main comparisons of both DJ software you can watch the video below. If you want more information keep reading on.

Serato vs Traktor: Main Differences and Similarities

I'm personally a big fan of both of these two programs, and while most DJs will not regret choosing one over the other since they both have so many features, there are a few perks that can only be found on one and not the other. The following information below is a comprehensive list of the most important differences between these two programs. I also mention a few similarities as well.

Serato is a little bit easier to use

Both Serato and Traktor are lauded for being very accessible and easy to use, but if I were to choose one over the other, I would choose Serato, at least in this regard. In fact, Serato has the most user-friendly interface in the DJ software business, or at least in my opinion. All the most relevant features are conveniently placed in the main menus, and overall you won't have a problem finding the ideal effect for the moment.

Traktor is a little bit different, for better or for worse. While choosing songs and doing simple mixes with them is a piece of cake just like with Serato, there are a few features that aren't as conveniently placed as the aforementioned software. Traktor does give you a little bit more freedom with the customization options though, which brings me to my next point.

Both Traktor and Serato look very sharp

So I have talked about a few distinguishing factors, but how about similarities? one of these is that both Traktor and Serato look rather similar. Both have a very modern, futuristic vibe that really fits in a high-end club, and if you tend to dig that look, you probably won't be disappointed with the GUI's of either of these.

Both DJ software also features the option to modify the looks of the menus, displays, etc... so if you do not like the look, you can always tinker with it to get what you are looking for. There are some very cool skins out there that really enhance the look of the interface. Just keep in mind that if you are interested in them, the stability of the platform might be affected.

Serato is more popular

Among these two software solutions, it's fair to say that Serato is definitely more popular. This is because of several factors. One of these is the fact that Serato (the lite version) is often included in DJ controllers made by companies such as Denon and Numark. The fact that this software comes pre-packaged with many controllers out there makes the transition to the pro version much more natural.

One of the other reasons why Serato is more popular is because they were one of the first choices in the now stacked DJ software market. First released in 1999, you could argue that Serato was the first popular DJ software that really caught on among established DJs. Traktor was released a year later, but they didn't capture as much market share as Serato did back then.

Serato is a little bit more reliable

DJ software reliability is one of those critical factors that you should really be on the lookout for, not only on the program itself but on the controllers that you are using too. And when it comes to reliability, both software has excellent track records, but the truth is that Serato leads the field in this regard. Serato has prided itself on the reliability and dependability of their program. their firm commitment to it has made them one of the top DJing software choices out there.

Serato tends to be the software that receives the most firmware updates. While some software might be updated once every year or so, Serato tends to receive bug fixes and updates once every few months at least, which is something that definitely contributes to the reliability. Not only that, but the dependability doesn't just mean that the program doesn't crash. It also means that the software is more compatible with a wider array of controllers, which brings me to my next point.

Serato is more compatible with DJ hardware

When it comes to hardware compatibility, Serato definitely wins in this regard. Some people say that Serato was specifically engineered to be stable in a wide array of computers and controllers, with specific hardware bugs being a rare sight. This is a big pro if you are still discovering new DJ gear and aren't sure what to use long-term. It's also great if you tend to use older or less common DJ hardware.

Traktor is also compatible with a wide array of controllers, but you can't argue the fact that bugs tend to be a little bit more prevalent, especially when using Traktor on more ancient controllers. Thankfully, the Native Instruments forum is a great place for people looking to deal with these issues. If you have a less common or older controller and are thinking of starting to use Traktor, I recommend that you go check that forum to see if there are Traktor bugs that are specific to your controller.

Traktor is more affordable

If you are on a tight budget, then the following paragraphs might interest you. The truth is that if you are looking for the most affordable and cost-effective choice, go for Traktor. The price for the full program is 99 bucks, unlike Serato DJ Pro, which costs 130 dollars for a full license. Those 99 bucks that you pay for the Traktor license does give you more than what the Serato license gives you.

For example, you get a wider array of beat and sounds effects on Traktor, while Serato makes you pay for expansion sound effects pack to get things that are found for free on Traktor. The prices for these expansion packs can range from 30 to 50 bucks depending on what you get, so keep that in mind if you are on a limited budget.

How About Other DJ Software? (Virtual DJ, Rekordbox DJ, Djuced)

In the future, I will be writing a comprehensive article about the main similarities and differences of all the major DJ software, but for now, let me tell you that all of these choices are excellent for DJs of any kind. However, as you probably know, they have their own small but significant features, so the best choice definitely depends on what you are willing and aren't willing to give up on.
